Release of Information Paper on "Unit Business Cost Index of the Manufacturing Sector: Rebasing to Year 2005

The Unit Business Cost Index for the manufacturing sector has been rebased to reference year 2005 using Singapore’s 2005 benchmark input-output tables to better reflect changing cost structures. The updated cost structure shows a fall in the relative share of labour cost and an increase in the relative share of services cost from 2000 to 2005. This can be attributed to the shift towards higher value-added and less labour intensive industries, and manufacturing firms outsourcing their non-manufacturing labour intensive activities.
